Die Nahua sind mit etwa 2 Millionen Menschen die größte indigene Volksgruppe in Mexiko, deren Gemeinsamkeit neben anderen kulturellen Aspekten die Sprache, das Nahuatl, ist. Die Bezeichnung leitet sich vom Namen der Sprache Nahuatl ab, der selbst wiederum „guter Klang, richtige Aussprache“ bedeutet.

Nahuatl ist eine aztekische Sprache, die heute noch von ungefähr 1,5 Millionen Menschen in Mittelamerika gesprochen wird. Es gibt ungefähr 1 500 Wörter im Spanischen, die aus dem Nahuatl stammen. Diese Wörter nennt man „Lehnwörter“. Auch in der deutschen Sprache haben die Azteken Spuren hinterlassen.
