1. Was ist Multiple Sklerose?
How are MRIs used to diagnose multiple sclerosis?
MRI has revolutionised the diagnosis and surveillance of patients with MS. Not only can an MRI confirm the diagnosis (see McDonald diagnostic criteria for multiple sclerosis), but follow-up scans can assess response to treatment and help determine the disease pattern.
What kind of lesions can you see on a MRI?
Characteristic lesions that favor MS include Dawson Fingers, ovoid lesions, corpus callosum lesions, and asymptomatic spinal cord lesions. However, other white matter diseases can have similar appearances on MRI.
What kind of lesions are found in multiple sclerosis?
Multiple lesions adjacent to the ventricles. Dawson fingers are typical for MS and are the result of inflammation around penetrating venules. These veins are perpendicular to the ventricular surface. Enhancement is another typical finding in MS.
Can a white matter lesion mimic multiple sclerosis?
In order to be able to answer that question, we have to realise that when we study white matter lesions (WMLs): Many neurological diseases can mimic MS both clinically and radiologically. Most incidentally found WMLs will have a vascular origin. The list of possible diagnoses of WMLs is long.
