Woher kommt das Wort Bitumen?
Das Wort Bitumen stammt aus dem Lateinischen und heißt übersetzt soviel wie Erdpech. Es ist ein Gemisch aus verschiedenen organischen Stoffen – hauptsächlich Kohlenstoff und Wasserstoff – das durch Vakuumdestillation aus Erdöl gewonnen werden kann.

Straßenbaubitumen wird über den Nadelpenetrationstest nach DIN EN 1426 klassifiziert. So bedeutet beispielsweise Bitumen 50/70, dass die Eindringtiefe der Testnadel zwischen 5 und 7 mm liegt. Übliche Sorten sind 70/100, 50/70, 30/45 und 20/30.
