Neben Wasser ist Zucker (hauptsächlich Rohrzucker bzw. Saccharose) der Hauptbestandteil der Cola. Durch den hohen Gehalt an Phosphorsäure in Mengen von 500 bis 600 mg/l (etwa 5 × 10-3mol/l) müßte Cola eigentlich sauer wie Essig schmecken. Das wird natürlich durch den hohen Gehalt an Zucker im Getränk unterdrückt.
