What is a domain in Active Directory?
A domain houses other containers and objects below it. In the early days of Active Directory, the domain was originally defined as the security boundary. However, that definition has been updated and now the forest is defined as the security boundary. That was a key change that went unnoticed by some administrators.
Should you use multiple domains for domain administration?
One of the organizational reasons for using multiple domains is to avoid potential problems associated with the Domain Administrator account. At least one user needs to have permissions at this level. If your organization is unable or unwilling to place this level of trust with all business units, then multiple domains may be the best answer.
What is a domain controller (DC)?
A domain controller (DC) is a server that runs Active Directory Domain Services and uses data stored in AD for user authentication and authorization, group management, policy administration, and additional functions. In practice, organizations typically have multiple domain controllers in on-premises datacenters and/or in the cloud.
How many users can Active Directory support?
Supporting many thousands of users within a single domain places higher disk space, CPU (central processing unit), and network burdens on your domain controllers. Determining the scalability of Active Directory is something you have to plan, design, test, and analyze within your own environment.
