Das Gelände zwischen den Gräben wurde als Niemandsland bezeichnet. Der Abstand zwischen den Gräben variierte je nach Frontabschnitt. Im Westen lag die Distanz üblicherweise bei 100 bis 250 Metern. An einigen Stellen, zum Beispiel bei Vimy, lagen die Gräben jedoch nur 25 Meter auseinander.
