Ursprünglich ist die Patenschaft ein rein religiöses Amt: Die Paten bezeugen mit ihrer Anwesenheit, dass das Kind getauft worden ist. Und sie versprechen, sich an der religiösen Erziehung zu beteiligten, das heißt, das Kind dabei zu begleiten, den Glauben zu entdecken.
